The Vertex Summer Internship Program offers students the opportunity to learn about the pharmaceutical industry from a hands-on perspective. Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking an outgoing and professional individual to join our team as a paid intern/co-op within the Information Sciences department. The Information Sciences group supports a global community of scientists and businesspeople who require cutting-edge information in their commitment to helping patients.
This intern will be involved in an implementation of a new library system, from final design to rollout and user training. This is a hands-on learning opportunity for a candidate in a Master’s program in Library/Information Science, and will strengthen the intern’s knowledge of web technologies, training and outreach, and special librarianship. Flexible hours; course credit possible.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in rollout of new library system
- Deliver training sessions and design help guides
- Process requests for individual articles and scientific documents until new library system is in place
- Prepare database of journal holdings, open access resources, and in-house article collection for transition to external library vendor
- Communicate with users and vendors to resolve issues
- Provide additional support for information management activities which may include maintaining usage analytics, evaluating new technologies, and global outreach
This role is expected to last from the Summer of 2015-December of 2015 with a 20-30 hour work week schedule.
Position Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have a Bachelor’s degree and be enrolled in a degree program leading to an advanced degree
- Minimum 3.2/4.0 GPA
Preferred Qualifications
- Enrollment in a Master’s program in Library/Information Science
- Previous experience in libraries, information management, or training/user education
- Strong organizational skills with acute attention to detail
- Knowledge of computer software and web technologies, with familiarity in SQL databases and Sharepoint a plus
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, to identify and tackle obstacles, and to manage and prioritize diverse responsibilities
- Strong communication skills; both written and verbal
