Elementary School Library, Media and Information Specialist, Norwell Public Schools, Norwell, MA

General Duties:

Work with students, teachers, and district library personnel to integrate library, technology, and media skills into the general curriculum; provide expertise in research and work with students and teachers to develop a knowledge and skill set for evaluating research and media in a variety of formats; establish a professional and inviting learning environment in the elementary school library/media center; and assist with overall district library/media program.

Reports to: School Principal

Qualifications:

  1. Hold or be eligible for a Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Library License required; additional Instructional Technology License desired;
  2. A graduate degree in school library science, instructional technology, or related field;
  3. Successful experience as a school media and technology specialist, preferably at the elementary school level; and
  4. Demonstrated ability to perform the responsibilities below as evidenced by course work, educational experience and/or system-wide professional activities, and the interview process.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement appropriate orientation programs for students and staff which will enable them to become users of the library/media center resources;
  2. Build and maintain a current collection of age appropriate literature that highlights notable authors and award winners, connects to the curricula, supports literacy initiatives, and instills an overall love of literature;
  3. Work with students and staff on strategies of how to choose reading level appropriate literature;
  4. Assist students and staff in developing general technology skills necessary to thrive in a technologically advanced society;
  5. Teach and co-teach research, media, or technology courses, assisting teachers in becoming independent users and instructors;
  6. Actively seek ways to support teachers’ curriculum needs and assist with integrating research and technology into the curriculum;
  7. Research and consult with teachers on integration of appropriate multimedia technology based upon curriculum goals, instructional objectives, and specific learning needs;
  8. Assist teachers in designing instructional environments in which students can interpret and analyze information using technology;
  9. Assist students and staff in developing skills necessary for independent research and reference work;
  10. Provide basic instruction in use of library/media center resources such as online databases;
  11. Establish and implement efficient procedures to catalog all materials for the elementary school library/media center, using Follett Destiny and/or other software programs; maintain complete and accurate inventory of all materials including technology; and assist with cataloguing for other school libraries;
  12. Coordinate services of volunteers to provide quality service to teachers and students;
  13. Establish library/media center procedures and maintain high behavioral standards for patrons;
  14. Coodinate and cooperate with each school library, the Norwell Public Library, and libraries outside of the district;
  15. Develop, promote, and schedule library/media center programs, routines, and group usage;
  16. Organize and oversee distribution of media equipment and provide technical set-up as needed;
  17. Research and evaluate hardware and software for applications, compatibility, and appropriateness, and convey the results to building and district administrators;
  18. Work with administration to procure relevant materials necessary to maintain a current collection and high level of service;
  19. Assume responsibility for ongoing professional development and re-certification, remaining current with developments in technology, media and instruction; and
  20. Perform other duties as directed by the Superintendent of Schools or designee.

Terms of Employment and Evaluation: In accordance with School Committee policy and the collective bargaining agreement.
