We are seeking an enthusiastic, forward-thinking, and motivated library professional to lead our Library. We require a dedicated team leader who is knowledgeable and experienced in all aspects of public librarianship including: staff management and evaluation, collection development, budgeting and budget oversight of an operating budget of around $700,000, marketing and public relations, understanding of facility systems and maintenance, strategic planning, working cooperatively with government officials and the public, excellent personal technology skills, overall knowledge of computer networks in a public library setting, and the ability to analyze and understand all facets of many types of library projects and issues.

The successful candidate must possess excellent communication skills, both in writing and verbally. As the Department Head of the City’s public library, duties include annual budget and other presentations to Ellsworth City Council and speaking to community groups about the Library, as well as community participation and working cooperatively with other city departments, the Friends of the Library, local schools and other stakeholders.

Our staff is currently composed of 8.19 FTEs plus an additional 1.95 FTEs from mid-May through late August, in addition to the Director. There currently is one other staff member with a professional degree and one staff member who is a candidate for the professional degree.

The Library is currently in the process of fundraising for a major expansion and renovation of our building and the Director will play an integral part in this effort and the actual project. Steps completed to date include a Long Range Plan, a Building Program, concept design, and a fundraising feasibility study. The project will be funded by a combination of City bond, grants, and a capital campaign.

We are located approximately equidistant between Bangor, Maine and the Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park area. Ellsworth is the county seat for Hancock County and the Library is located in a historic building in the vital downtown area of the city.

Ellsworth was the fastest growing city in Maine at the 2010 Census count, with a population increase of almost 20% over the numbers in the 2000 Census. We are also one of the largest cities in the United States geographically with approximately 93 square miles of area.

Our area experiences a massive seasonal population increase with “snow birds” returning each spring to their homes or seasonal homes plus an influx of tourists who come for shorter vacations to experience Maine. Acadia National Park is always at or near the top in number of visits to our national parks with about 3 million visits per year. The park will celebrate its centennial anniversary in 2016 and our Library will be taking an active part with a related community read, other programming for all ages, art exhibits, and displays.

The Ellsworth Public Library is an important part of the municipal and county infrastructure that supports the permanent residents and the visitors to our city and our region.
