Learning and Assessment Designer, Harvard University Library, Cambridge, MA

The Harvard Library seeks a Learning & Assessment Designer for a one-year term to build dynamic online learning materials that advance the library’s research, teaching and learning mission and reflect state-of-the-art pedagogical techniques. The Learning & Assessment Designer reports to the Online Learning Librarian and provides direct support for the creation of online learning objects to be shared across Harvard Library. The Designer collaborates with the Library UX Specialist to ensure that online learning objects model best practices in web and mobile design. The Designer collaborates with the Online Learning Librarian on research projects designed to advance our understanding of effective strategies for online library instruction. In addition, the Designer trains Harvard librarians in the design and development of online learning objects and the effective use of common instructional design techniques and technologies. Please note that this is a one year grant funded term appointment starting from the date of hire.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Designs and develops online learning products including multimedia components (audio, video, animations, simulations, etc.). 
  • Applies learning design principles and learning theories to support active learning. 
  • Develops course and module storyboards, creates formats for digital materials, and produces course design documents.  
  • Creates assessments to meet learning objectives for learning products. 
  • Assists in research design, data collection and analysis of online learning objects. 
  • Works with Library UX Specialist to conduct iterative testing of online learning objects based on best practices in user-centered design and accessibility.

Basic Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Learning Sciences, Instructional Design, Library & Information Science, Cognitive Psychology, or related area, or equivalent education or work experience required 
  • Minimum of four – five years of working experience in learning design environment  
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic graphic design and web design principles required

Additional Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience working in collaborative team settings 
  • Experience teaching in higher education settings; online teaching experience preferred. 
  • Work experience designing simulations and/or games for learning or experience with adaptive learning systems desired  
  • Experience working with learning management systems, particularly the Canvas LMS, desired 
  • Prior work experience working with quantitative data collection and analysis desired
