The Brown University Library invites applications for the 8-month position of Project Archivist for the Gordon Hall and Grace Hoag Collection of Dissenting and Extremist Printed Propaganda, a grant-funded position. The Hall-Hoag Collection contains documents representing a broad spectrum of militant political, social and religious dissent in the United States, from the post-World War II period to the present.
The Project Archivist will coordinate processing of the collection that will result in Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aid and Encoded Archival Context (EAC) records. The Project Archivist will work in close consultation with staff from Special Collections and Digital Technologies to create EAC records and subject descriptors that will facilitate access to the collection. S/he will review all data to ensure consistency in the use of standards. The Project Archivist will supervise several student assistants.
The Project Archivist will publicize the activities and goals of the project via University Library publicity outlets and press releases via professional listservs and web sites. The Project Archivist reports to the University Archivist.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in library/information science, history, or history-related field with training in special collections or archival administration.
- A minimum of two years experience arranging and describing archival records.
- Experience using EAD and understanding of arrangement and description of archival and manuscript collections.
- Familiarity with FileMaker Pro.
- Awareness of national trends in archival description, such as EAC.
- Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate clearly in presentations.
- Ability to interact effectively with many different constituencies.
- Capacity to organize multiple projects simultaneously and work successfully in a deadline-oriented environment.
- Strong knowledge of and experience with digital archive initiatives, particularly in the development of policies and procedures.
- Working knowledge of AACR2, AAT, LCSH, and LC classification is preferred
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Supervisory experience.
- Understanding of grant writing procedures and management of grant-funded projects.
