Archivist – 81A, Minuteman Group, Lexington, MA

Our client is seeking an experienced professional for the position of Processing Archivist.  Supervised by our client’s Archivist, the Processing Archivist is primarily responsible for organizing, rehousing, and documenting transferred record accessions and integrating them into the Archives processed collections. The candidate will provide consistent, accurate, secure metadata access to Laboratory intellectual property and proprietary records.  Materials relate to the Laboratory’s mission areas: space control, air and missile defense technology, communication and information technology, IRS systems and technology, advanced electronics technology, homeland protection, and air traffic control.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsibilities will include: collections analysis, meeting with record creators, records arrangement, provision of intellectual control, preservation practices, and all related activities according to national standards for archival treatment of archival paper, artifact, and digital collections.
  • Application of context and accurate metadata within Archives and other content management tools to maximize archival record accessibility and use as a research record.
  • Leadership and focus on the enhancement of technology, methods, and standards for improving processing workflows and tools for paper and digital records.
  • Training, collaborating, and assisting other Archives staff with technical processing tasks.
  • Administration of processing supplies and materials workflow, including the shelf environment and the disposition of non-selected records.
  • Other archives responsibilities may include: appraisal, accession, tool testing, light reference, digitization and associated quality reviews, archives operational tasks, and special projects.

Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited Masters in Library Science with an Archives concentration/specialization.
  • An undergraduate degree in the physical sciences or engineering, or at least 2 years’ professional experience processing records of a scientific nature.
  • Five years of demonstrated experience processing institutional records of various records types in accordance with national archival standards and best practices.
  • Compelling interest in archival processing and a proven aptitude for related skills including: effective time-management, organization, problem-solving, follow-through, and decision-making.
  • Practical experience with processing non-standard record formats including: oversize paper records, artifacts, audiovisual and born-digital materials.
  • Experience working with digital forensic tools such as Bulk Extractor and FTK Imager to process born-digital records.
  • Demonstrated experience with cataloging in a standard library catalog environment and other relevant metadata application.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills which demonstrate the ability to effectively convey and explain information clearly, concisely, directly, and tactfully.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment, build consensus and promote the exchange of information among project team members, project management staff and elsewhere.
  • Candidate must be highly motivated and able to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Practical experience using Archivist’s Toolkit for accessions and processing.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Microsoft Office software suite.
  • Must be able to lift 40lb. boxes, and handle large format paper records.
  • An ability to maintain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance are required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with digitization workflows, quality assurance, and tools, esp. Adobe Acrobat Pro and ScandAll Pro.
  • Familiarity with creating records for and accessing records within content management systems.
  • Experience handling sensitive and/or classified information.
  • U.S. Department of Defense security clearance.
