Profile of the Libraries and the Research and Education Division

As a strong partner in student learning, UNLV Libraries fosters critical thinking and lifelong learning with innovative services, entrepreneurial staff, outstanding digital collections, up-to-date technology and internationally renowned Special Collections, including two research centers: the Center for Gaming Research and the Oral History Research Center. University Libraries is comprised of Lied Library and three branch libraries and we are a gateway to more than 20,000 electronic journals and 1.7 million books, including e-books. The Research and Education (RED) Division has four departments and three branch libraries, with 40 staff members, of which 20 are library faculty. RED includes the Library Liaisons Program, Educational Initiatives, New Media Services, User Services, and the Architecture Studies Library, the Curriculum Materials Library, and the Music Library. Other areas within the scope of RED are campus outreach and collaborations, campus communications, public technology, and public space planning.

The Research and Education Division (RED) fosters collaborations that contribute to our users’ academic success, research, and lifelong learning. The Division positively impacts student learning and supports the research and scholarly agenda of the University.

Role of the Position

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries seeks innovative, collaborative, user-focused applicants for the position of Social Sciences Librarian. Reporting to the Head of the Library Liaison Program, this position will support undergraduate, graduate and faculty research in the departments of anthropology, sociology and political science throughout the research lifecycle. Liaison librarians serve as the primary contact between UNLV Libraries and their departments. The successful candidate will develop curriculum-integrated instructional sessions, provide research support and consultations, and maintain an effective collection in these disciplines in order to meet the teaching and research needs of faculty and students. The incumbent will also participate in the Libraries’ strategic initiatives to assess the needs of faculty and students related to the acquisition and management of data.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work in a complex, changing environment with a positive, flexible, and innovative attitude, and he or she will have a proven capacity to work effectively and collegially in teams with staff at all levels, as well as with faculty and students.

As a tenure-track library faculty member, the incumbent will also be expected to engage in scholarly activities; and provide service to the university, the community, and the profession in accordance with Libraries and University standards for promotion and tenure.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Demonstrated subject knowledge and familiarity with social sciences resources and research methodologies.
  • Familiarity with information literacy theory, practice, and assessment.
  • Knowledge of emerging information technologies and their application to research and teaching.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to prioritize workload assignments.

Preferred:

  • Relevant undergraduate or graduate degree in the social sciences or sciences, or significant discipline-specific experience in an academic library.
  • Demonstrated experience with quantitative and/or qualitative data services and software.
  • Understanding of current trends and issues in scholarly publishing and communication.
  • Familiarity with current issues in data management.
  • Academic library experience with research assistance and information literacy instruction.

Salary Range

This is a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track position at Rank II or III (equivalent to an Assistant or Associate Professor). Salary range starts at $60,100 – salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salaries are competitive with those at similarly situated institutions and dependent upon labor market. In addition, the UNLV University Libraries is committed to and helps fund professional development opportunities. Position is contingent upon funding.
