Library Director, Congregational Library & Archives, Boston, MA

The Congregational Library & Archives seeks an experienced Director with skills in program management, staff supervision, and administration. Located on Boston’s Beacon Hill, the Library & Archives is a historic repository of over 225,000 items, including rare books, archival collections, and a robust digital program. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of strategic planning and project management, budgeting and finance, facilities management, staff development, understanding of current technologies, and outstanding writing and communication skills.

Candidates must hold an MLS from an ALA-accredited program, a record of progressively responsible positions, and at least five years in a leadership role. Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest and resume to Claudette Newhall, Librarian, [email protected].

The Library Director reports to the Executive Director and manages all aspects of the Library and Archive operations, including personnel, budgeting, collection policies and management, and facilities.  Performs other related duties, as required or as situation dictates.

Personnel/Staff Supervision

Librarian supervises library and archives staff and is responsible for personnel administration. Librarian maintains personnel records and policies

Financial Management

  • With CPA, annual budgeting
  • Administers approved budget (monthly “dashboard” meetings)
  • Long-term budget planning (with ED)
  • Monitors expenditures on grants for library and archives
  • Petty cash/Credit card

Project Supervision

  • Strategic planning and implementation
  • Archive Space
  • Digitization (not NEHH directly)

Collections Management

  • Cataloging – Librarian oversees the continued automation of library operations and maintenance if the ILS system.
  • Acquisitions – Librarian researches, selects, and purchases suitable materials, receives requests for books from Executive Director, and prioritizes order
  • Weeding – Duplicate copies of non-core printed materials are removed. 
  • Donations

Reference/Research

Librarian provides reference assistance and refers patrons to other employees with special knowledge.
