The Town of Burrillville, a community of 16,000 located in northwest Rhode Island, is seeking applicants for the position of Library Director. The Town is looking for a dynamic leader for our municipal library, a 24,900 square foot facility with a collection of 70,590 volumes. The Town is seeking a highly responsible professional with experience in administrative work: managing, planning, organizing, and directing the staff consisting of 18 employees and operational functions/activities for the Burrillville Jesse M. Smith Memorial Library, including management and control of the department operating budget, capital program and finances. The Director reports to the five member Board of Trustees but is part of the town’s management team, working closely with the Town Manager and other department heads.
Supervision is exercised either directly or through subordinate supervisors. Work is performed under direction of the a five member Library Board of Trustees, the Town Manager, other municipal department heads and in accordance with OLIS, federal and state laws, the Town Charter, local ordinances, policies, rules and regulations. Must be able to act independently, communicate and coordinate effectively and maintain a cordial and professional demeanor when interacting with public officials, the general public, town, school and other public or private agencies/organizations.
A Masters of Library Science or Library & Information Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association is required. At least 5 years’ experience within the library profession with at least three of those in a supervisory position is also required. Candidates should also possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, ability to resolve conflicts and handle critical incidents and strong experience in library operations. Experience in grant writing is also desirable. He/She needs to be prepared to deal with the changing face of librarianship (e.g. changes in technology and book delivery), strong experience in library technology are desired.
Salary for this position is up to $60,550.00 depending on background and qualifications. The Town of Burrillville offers an attractive benefit package. A multi-year employment agreement is the standard practice for senior management employees, with a mandatory probationary period to be served.
