General Statement of Duties: The Director serves as chief administrative officer and is responsible for management of all aspects of library services in conformity with policies established by the Board of Trustees, the Town of Lakeville and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
The Director is responsible for staffing, planning, organizing, coordinating, reporting and budgeting of all library services.
Supervision Received: Serves under the general supervision of the publicly elected Board of Trustees, who develop policy with the professional advice of the Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plans and initiates library service programs by assessing community needs, collecting and analyzing community and library data, formulating goals, and initiating programs in anticipation of or in response to community needs. Formulates policies governing the library and recommends them to the Library Board for approval.
- Manages and coordinates library staff, including development of work schedules. Provides leadership in establishing effective communications and working relationships; encourages creativity and initiative ensuring high quality public services.
- Reviews, selects and orders library materials for adults, including print, non-print and digital collection. Evaluates collection for weeding and discard of materials.
- Administers library budget; the municipal appropriation, state and federal funds, gift and donations. Maintains fiscal monitoring and reports expenditures of all funds to the Board of Trustees.
- Actively initiates pursuit of supplemental sources of funding, preparing grant proposals to state agencies, foundations and other organizations to fund new or supplemental service needs.
- Manages public relations to promote Library services, including issuing publicity releases to local newspapers and radio for programs and services. Addresses community groups and civic organizations.
- Coordinates and analyzes library operations, summarizes developments, issues monthly reports on library services and activities to the Library Board. Attends Board meetings, acts as liaison between Library Board and staff. Represents the library at meetings of official town boards and committees, local community service boards and organizations, regional and state library agencies, and professional organizations.
- Researches, implements and maintains various software and hardware associated with technology. Evaluates and introduces new technology as appropriate. Arranges for or conducts library staff training.
- Manages library building to ensure proper maintenance and utilization of library facilities. Analyzes building needs and recommend improvements to the Board of Trustees. Ensures safe and efficient conditions for staff and public of all ages within the building and grounds. Responds to building emergencies and takes appropriate action. Ensures servicing of library equipment (from computers to heating and cooling system) to maintain proper working order.
Other Required Responsibilities:
- Performs highly responsible work requiring the frequent exercise of leadership, independent judgment, and initiative in planning and overseeing the administration of the Town Public Library and in the development and delivery of library services to meet individual and community needs.
- Assesses trends in library service and makes appropriate recommendations to Trustees for changes and/or additions to the library services offered.
- Attends all meetings of the Friends and advises them in their auxiliary capacity.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Leadership ability and a high degree of motivation, initiative and resourcefulness.
- Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, methods, practices and materials.
- Knowledge of local, regional, state and federal library regulations.
- Considerable knowledge of methods of library administration and management, including personnel, planning and budget control.
- Considerable knowledge of or willingness to learn about up-to-date computer equipment, maintenance and repair techniques, operating systems, programs and networks.
- Ability to direct the work of professional, clerical and maintenance personnel.
- Effective skills in oral and written communication for contact with public and staff.
- Adaptability, initiative, tact, courtesy and good judgment.
- Progressively responsible experience, including five years of full time administrative and supervisory experience in a public library.
Salary: $52,407 – $59,858
