Let’s Get Real: Practical Ideas for Teaching Info Lit Today
One-shot instruction, semester-long credit courses, embedded and personal librarianship, learning communities, customized workshops…the delivery channels for information literacy instruction are practically endless. The common factor, however, is our focus on reaching today’s students effectively. Librarians as scholars are bombarded with theory; however, it’s time to get real! This year’s conference is devoted to the mechanics of delivering effective and engaging information literacy instruction. Attendees will leave the conference with practical ideas to invigorate their programs.
Call for Breakout Session and Poster Proposals now through February 25, 2015.
The Connecticut Information Literacy Conference Committee invites you and your colleagues to submit proposals for breakout sessions (45-50 minutes long with a 10-15 minute Q & A session). Proposals should emphasize how to implement the topic (including tie-in with new ACRL standards, planning details, and assessment). Workshops that include hands-on activities, role-playing exercises, and other audience participation activities are welcomed!
Ideas for possible session topics include:
- Ways to reach distance learning students
- New and multiple literacies (metaliteracy)
- Advocacy and outreach workshops
- Classroom strategies for engagement
- Transitioning from “sage on the stage” to “guide on the side”
- How to teach effectively when you’re given only one shot
- Innovative (as well as traditional) partnerships with new programs, the community, and others
- Teaching to “today’s generation” of students
- Best practices in assessing teaching, learning, and program effectiveness
Team presenters such as faculty-librarian are highly encouraged to submit a proposal.
The Committee will also review proposals for posters to be displayed during the Conference. Posters should reflect the conference theme, Let’s Get Real: Practical Ideas for Teaching Info Lit Today, and address best practices in information literacy instruction and assessment as outlined in the examples listed above. Exhibitors will be expected to discuss their posters with attendees as needed.
