Collections Manager, Art and Artifacts Collection, Harvard Business School, Boston, MA

Reporting to the Director, Special Collections, Knowledge and Library Services, and working with the HBS Art and Artifacts Collections Steering Committee, implements the strategy for collection growth and related policies and procedures for collections management, using the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) guidelines as reference; completes day-to-day registrarial functions for the collection; conducts an annual inventory of works across the campus; updates and maintains the collection management database, including researching provenance information, exhibition records, bibliography, location, and ordering hi-resolution photographs of each object; manages the HBS Art and Artifacts Collection budget; assists with the development and implementation of the Campus Art Master Plan; develops, maintains, and implements collections accessioning and deaccessioning policy; provides oversight for proper storage of the collection and conservation needs; assists with Special Collections exhibitions and installations throughout the HBS campus; works with the Steering Committee and other arts groups on campus in order to contribute to the creation and implementation of a robust educational program that will engage the larger community with the HBS Art and Artifacts Collection; and coordinates the activities of the HBS Art Program in collaboration with the Steering Committee.
This is a term appointment running through 6/30/16.
Basic Qualifications:
- BA and MA degrees in art history and/or Museum Studies required. Expertise in American, Modern, and Contemporary Art strongly preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in art and artifact collection management, registrarial work, and cataloging collections using a digital collection database management system (such as The Museum System).
- Must have experience processing loans and managing acquisitions.
- Art handling experience required.
- Experience working with conservators, professional framers, and dealers/galleries.
- Candidate must be diplomatic and discreet, and able to work well with others both within and outside of Harvard.
