Summer Librarian, Hancock Point Library, Hancock, ME

The Hancock Point Library Association is looking for someone to run the Hancock Point Library for the summer of 2015. The position offers someone a unique opportunity to work in (and live in) a wonderful old octagonal library set in a coastal summer community. Applicants with library degrees and/or experience preferred.

Salary: $3000 plus use of in-library accommodations (3 small bedrooms, bath, sitting room and kitchen)

Starting and Ending Dates: June 28 through September 5 (a substitute could be made available for the last week)

Library Hours: M-Sat. 9-12, plus 3-5pm on M, W, & Fri (The library is open 24 hrs. /week, but clerical duties generally require 8-10 additional hours per week.)

Job Description:

The librarian reports to the Library Board of Directors.

Responsibilities include:

  • Book selection and acquisition (mostly through local bookstores and internet buying)
  • Book processing and catalog maintenance
  • Book circulation – checking books out, shelving returned books, chasing down overdues
  • Collection of use statistics
  • Staffing the library during library hours
  • Keeping accurate financial records and reporting them to the treasurer
  • Keeping library clean (after major pre-season cleaning has been done)
  • Community outreach – e.g. weekly story hours and Wednesday afternoon teas.
  • Report on library activities and statistics at Library annual meeting (early August)
  • Assist board members with book sale – weeding, setup & cleanup. (biennial) – No book sale in 2015
