Archives Media Specialist, Minuteman Group, Lexington, MA

Supervised by the Laboratory Archivist the Archives Media Specialist is responsible for much of the day to day work involving photographs, negatives, films, videos, audio recordings and other media materials, dating from 1951 to current, held by the Laboratory Archives. This position is part of the Archives team working with both Archives staff and in collaboration with Technical Communications staff. This role emphasizes organizational, communication, and customer service skills and provides opportunity for growth of technical and professional knowledge. This position requires expertise in legacy media and equipment as well as current technology, and a detailed knowledge of asset management and exhibit software. Materials relate to the Laboratory’s mission areas: space control, air and missile defense technology, communication and information technology, IRS systems and technology, advanced electronics technology, homeland protection, and air traffic control.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and teach the application of standardized formal audiovisual metadata to optimize their discovery and use
  • Appraise, plan, recommend, and implement basic conservation measures for audiovisual types held within the Archives
  • Implement and cultivate asset and/or archives management databases for describing audiovisual materials
  • Perform vendor selection and develop systems for prioritizing and preparing audiovisual materials for digitization
  • Develop workflows and procedures facilitating the inclusion of born digital audiovisual materials into archives
  • Increase outreach to stakeholders and record creators to enhance accurate description and preservation of Laboratory audiovisual materials prior to archival transfer
  • Improve Laboratory public access to audiovisual materials through the use of OMEKA exhibits tool
  • Perform archival research on Laboratory history and programs to identify audiovisual content
  • Assist in Archives areas outside of audio-visual materials including some reference, copy requests, acquisitions, exhibits, and other outreach activities

Special Talents & Qualifications (Security Clearance Level, etc):

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Master’s degree in library science, or B.A. and five years relevant experience

  • Experience working with multiple audio-visual formats in a library or archives environment, including: film, VHS and 3/4in. video media, photographic negatives and prints, microfilm/fiche, and digital video formats
  • Hands-on expertise with current and legacy media technology including projectors, splicers, VHS and 3/4in. video players, audio reel players
  • Proven expertise in using and configuring asset and archives management tools including: Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Bridge, Daminion and Archivist’s Toolkit
  • Proficiency with OMEKA software for exhibit design and collection display
  • Knowledge of audiovisual metadata fields and standards (including Dublin Core) and their practical usage
  • Evidence of excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Candidate must be a highly motivated, dedicated, curious, and enthusiastic team player
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to lift 40-50lb. boxes
