Reference Assistant, Massachusetts Archives, Boston, MA

Job Description: Acting on behalf of the Secretary of the Commonwealth, the Massachusetts Archives is responsible for securing, preserving, and managing for the public good those noncurrent records of state government deemed to have archival (permanent) value. The Archives houses over 30,000 cubic feet of records and receives nearly 5,000 visitors each year, researching topics ranging from genealogy to military history to legislative records and more.

The Reference Assistant is a full-time, entry level position.

Job Responsibilities: Assisting the Reference Supervisor with the operations of the Reference Desk; researching and responding to written requests; ensuring that security policies are followed in the Reading Room; some clerical duties, data entry, and special reference projects; outreach opportunities, including small exhibits and blog entries; other duties as assigned by the Reference Supervisor and Administrative staff.

Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this position holds a Master’s degree in library/information science or history, or has nearly completed their studies, and has an interest in reference services. Strong interpersonal skills and public service experience is essential, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills, and powers of observation and concentration consistent with the security requirements inherent in handling valuable materials in a public context. An interest in American history is advantageous. The candidate should enjoy interacting with people; be flexible, patient, and motivated; and enjoy a job where each day offers the unexpected.

Hours worked: Full-time: M-F, 8:30-4:30 (37.5 hours/week)

Compensation: $10/hour; no benefits provided
