GIS Mapping Intern for Newton Cemetery, Newton, MA

Newton Cemetery is seeking an independent person to serve as the GIS Mapping Intern. This position will allow an individual to acquire GIS and planning experience through the creation of a map layer for Newton Cemetery. Skill in ESRI ArcGIS online, database management and programming are recommended. The new map layer will be accessed online by cemetery visitors to lookup grave locations.

Established in 1855, Newton Cemetery is an active, historic garden cemetery serving the needs of Newton and the greater Boston area. There are more than 40,000 burials on the 100 acres of grounds. The grounds are open daily to the public. The City of Newton, Massachusetts is located eight miles west of Boston and is accessible via public transportation.

Objective:

The intern will be responsible for creating a map layer for Newton Cemetery using ArcGIS and linking grave location information to the existing cemetery database. Accomplishing these tasks will lead to the creation of an online database, accessible through the Newton Cemetery website, allowing cemetery visitors to obtain burial locations. There will be training sessions at the beginning of the internship to familiarize the intern with the objectives of the project and cemetery operations.

This internship is offered at $15.00 per hour and is anticipated to last approximately 10-12 weeks over the summer of 2015.  It is possible that the project could be done on a part-time basis during the spring/summer semester, and the cemetery is open to discussing flexibility with the timing of the project. The anticipated completion is by September 1st, 2015.

Relationships:

Reports to the Director of Operations.

The individual will have direct working relations with numerous staff members of the cemetery including the Director of Operations, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds and the President.

Duties:

Typical duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Create map layer using ArcGIS software and existing CAD drawings of cemetery lots.
  2. Link map layer with cemetery database information including cemetery section, lot and name of deceased.  Newton Cemetery currently utilizes an industry specific SQL server database program for maintaining cemetery records.
  3. Document and verify various grave parcels.
  4. Complete other duties and projects as assigned related to the Cemetery.

Requirements:

  1. Currently pursuing (or recently received) a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a related field, and wish to obtain GIS and planning experience.
  2. Experience with ESRI ArcGIS online, database management, and programming.
