The Amherst College Library Technical Services Department is the site of this position. This position reports to the Cataloging Librarian for Metadata, and works collaboratively with faculty, librarians, and students on the Timeline of LGBT Political Landmarks in the Americas project.

Job Description Responsibilities:

This is a hands-on position to provide metadata support for a digital humanities project to develop an interactive timeline charting significant events in the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans* (LGBT) activism in the Americas. The Metadata Consultant will:

    * establish a data model and metadata element set for the timeline, drawing from existing standards where they exist
    * document and define all data elements to be used in the project
    * provide guidance to undergraduate student researchers on best practices for metadata creation
    * develop written documentation to be used in future phases of the project

The intern will report to the Cataloging Librarian and work collaboratively with faculty, librarian, and student members of LGBT Timeline project team.

Qualifications

Required:
Enrollment in the GSLIS program
Attendance at the GSLIS West program
Excellent organizational skills
Strong technology skills

Preference given to enrollment in or completion of any of the following:
LIS 416 Introduction to Cataloging and Classification
LIS 417 Advanced Subject Cataloging and Classification
LIS 445 Metadata
LIS 469 XML

Hourly rate:
$12.00/hour.

Hours/term:
20 hours per week for a 22 week term.

Days and times needed:
Hours are flexible but most hours must be scheduled between 8:30 am-4:30 pm Mon-Thurs.
