Serials Assistant, Harvard University, Cambridge MA

Information and Technical Services actively supports the teaching and research mission of the Harvard Library by managing monograph, serial and e-resource acquisitions, metadata creation, and metadata management for the Harvard Library.

 

As a member of the Serials Cataloging unit within the Electronic Resources and Serials Section, under the supervision of the Manager for Serials Cataloging, the incumbent provides timely access to Harvard Library collections by performing a combination of detailed, routine library operations to engage in the processing of library materials.  The incumbent is responsible for making some decisions that required consideration of various criteria within the limits prescribed by established policies, procedures and desired end results.

 

Priorities will be set to maximize contributions to the overall goals of the Information and Technical Services Department of the Harvard Library. Staff may be called upon to apply their skills and/or receive additional training in order to contribute to work in other ITS units or teams as occasional, short-term needs occur.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Creates item and/or holdings records for cataloged and uncataloged serial issues, following established guidelines

Opens shipments of incoming serials acquisitions

Processes invoices for continuing resource materials received by Processes invoices for continuing resource materials received by the library

 

Creates preliminary bibliographic records for serials received as gifts, following established guidelines

Searches online library databases to locate and download bibliographic records according to established guidelines

Contributes to the overall goals of the department as appropriate

 

Qualifications:

High school graduate or equivalent, preferably with some formal training beyond high school, such as two years of college course work or Associates degree

Proficiency with Microsoft Windows operating system and Windows software

Must have excellent English language communication skills

Competency in keyboarding

Library or other related experience and/or familiarity with Western European language(s) preferred

 

Compensation commensurate with experience
