Job Description:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages Learning Commons and Scholarly Commons (LC) assistants in the LC during assigned evenings; monitors the operation of equipment and supplies. Provides reference and technical assistance to patrons of the Learning/Scholarly Commons. Primary responsibility for the Library in evenings and backup supervisor for evening Circulation Service Desk.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Acts as the Library’s primary supervisor during the assigned evening shift.
  • Assists with the planning and design of LC services and spaces.
  • Provides customer service from the LC Service Desk including responding to library and technology inquiries from students, faculty, and staff.
  • Manages LC assistants in the LC spaces, including training on policies and procedures, assigning work schedules, evaluating performance, hiring, and terminating when appropriate.
  • Provides training on LC Service Desk protocols to LC Service Desk staff.
  • Monitors the operation of computers, printers, scanners in LC spaces to ensure their proper operation.
  • Manages the overall physical space of the LC, including the facility’s overall presentation and effective signage.
  • Provides assistance to patrons in the use of COIN, VPN, and other University  technical resources, as appropriate.
  • Provides reference assistance to patrons.
  • Trains LC assistants on the use of Library resources.
  • Trains Library staff and student assistants on the use of LC resources.
  • Manages inventory of supplies in the LC, ensuring adequate supplies and inventories.
  • Serves on committees to evaluate policies and procedures of the LC. Makes recommendations for changes or new policies and procedures to ensure efficiency and consistency of operations.
  • Participates in data gathering for activity in the LC.
  • Serves as backup supervisor at the Circulation Service Desk.
  • Serves on appropriate Library and campus committees.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS   REQUIRED  AT  HIRE  (List knowledge, skills, abilities)

  • Knowledge of the terminology, codes and standard abbreviations used in electronic data processing.
  • Knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of EDP equipment.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of EDP.
  • Knowledge of the types and applications of job control language applicable to EDP operating systems.
  • Knowledge of the standard office practices relative to record keeping and report preparation.
  • Knowledge of the methods of general report writing.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of operating computers and peripheral devices (tape drives, consoles, input/output devices, etc.)
  • Knowledge of the methods used in the preparation of flow charts and diagrams.
  • Knowledge of the types, availability and applications of EDP operating systems including communication networks.
  • Skill in operating EDP equipment such as consoles, input/output devices, etc.
  • Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining subordinates’ training needs and providing or arranging for such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively; determining the need for disciplinary action and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action.
  • Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of electronic processing data, to draw conclusions and to make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to understand and apply the policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Ability to work in a team setting.
  • Ability to adjust to changing situations to meet emergency or changing production requirements.
  • Ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise and understandable manner.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as computer printouts, operating manuals, specifications and layouts for  EDP equipment.
  • Ability to prepare general reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to prepare and use flow charts and diagrams.
  • Ability to work accurately with names, numbers, codes and symbols.
  • Ability to perform arithmetical computations with speed and accuracy (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in electronic data processing work, the major duties of which included diagnosing and correcting computer program defects, data errors, and/or equipment failures, and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions as per the Massachusetts Classification Specification.   • NOTE: No substitutions will be permitted for the required (B) experience.

 


Additional Information:

SUPERVISION RECEIVED (Name and title of person from whom incumbent receives direction)

Receives direct supervision from the Library Access Services Division Head, who provides procedural and technical guidance, assigns work and reviews performance through inspection, reports and conferences for effectiveness and compliance with established standards, procedures, policies, rules and regulations.

DIRECT REPORTING STAFF

Shares in the supervision of up to 30 Learning Commons and library student assistants.
