Internship, Oakland History Room, Oakland Public Library, Oakland CA

The Oakland History Room is a specialized research collection that focuses on Oakland and East Bay Area history. Housed in the Main branch of the Oakland Public Library, it contains extensive collections of books, newspaper clippings, ephemera such as postcards and cultural programs, vintage photographs, maps, and real estate block books. The History Room serves a wide variety of people including students of all levels, scholars, creative writers, visual artists, architects, real estate professionals, naturalists, and home owners.The Friends of the Oakland History Room, a nonprofit community organization, is sponsoring a  three-month internship to one currently-enrolled Library and Information Studies student who is interested in working with archival materials.  The internship will begin in Spring 2014 (exact date to be determined by the head librarian and student).  The student will be expected to work three to four hours each week at a rate of $15.00 per hour. During the internship, the student will work under the supervision of the head librarian of the Oakland History Room and alongside professional librarians working on a variety of projects which can include:

  • Inventory and organization of the Oakland Public Library records
  • Photo Digitization project
  • Inventory of the Manuscripts Collection
  • Collecting metadata for historic map cataloging

The internship will provide the student with opportunities to observe reference work in a busy public library setting, to build practical and professional skills, and to learn about Oakland and East Bay history.ELIGIBILITY:

  • Must be a currently-enrolled student at an accredited Library and Information Studies program.
  • Can demonstrate interest in archival work.
  • Has interest in working in a busy, urban public library setting.
