Scanning and Document Delivery Associate, MIT Libraries, Cambridge MA

The MIT Libraries is seeking a production- and service-oriented individual to contribute to digital imaging
activities for document delivery and project scanning. This position provides the opportunity for using and
developing technical and library skill sets related to imaging services, document delivery, and digital libraries
and is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a dynamic academic library setting.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Digital Imaging Supervisor, the Associate fulfills document and
interlibrary loan requests from multiple input streams including ILLIAD and Rapid using specialized software.
S/he prepares materials from the Libraries’ collections for scanning and electronic delivery, converts documents to PDF or other output formats and utilizes OCR and image processing applications. S/he uses multiple types of scanning software (Quickscan, Opus Freeflow, Silverfast AI, Scan2Net) as well as applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, or PrimeOCR to perform advanced image processing tasks. S/he follows established procedures and work flows to scan MIT Theses, Technical Reports and Working Papers, to scan readings for electronic course reserves, and to digitize historical or rare items. The Associate is responsible for quality control, works with vendors to facilitate repairs, works with staff to resolve complex problems and provides limited technical support to customers who report problems downloading PDF files. S/he works closely with his/her supervisor and other staff members to meet customer deadlines and production goals, while maintaining MIT Libraries’ quality standards for all scanning activities. S/he also tracks project progress, statistics and other information using the unit’s wiki and/or Excel spreadsheets. The Associate works collaboratively with staff within ID&LA and across the Libraries, shares knowledge of digital imaging operations and applications, serves as a resource to staff, and, may coordinate the work of other staff.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required – Minimum of 3 years direct/related experience which provides understanding of
scanning, image correction; post high school education can count toward experience. Solid experience with
standard computer software such as Windows or Mac OS. Technical experience with digital imaging equipment and related Windows-based software applications such as Adobe Acrobat Professional, Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Excel. A demonstrated affinity for and adeptness in learning, understanding and effectively using technology. Excellent organizational skills, including ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, manage competing priorities and work with minimal supervision. Ability to identify problems and carry out solutions independently or in collaboration with others. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, and ability to work as an integral part of a service team. Ability to apply skills to new, complex or unique situations. Aptitude for accurate, detail oriented work and strong data entry skills. Preferred – Familiarity with digital imaging technologies and standards, including scanner technology, digitization workflow, imaging system troubleshooting, or image analysis and processing software. Experience using wikis and/or blogs. Experience in academic and/or research library and/or a customer service environment. Experience working with interlibrary loan or document delivery.

HOURS: 35 hours per week, Monday-Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Some flexibility in scheduling is
possible.
