Project Assistant, Center for the History of Medicine, Francis A. Countway Library, Harvard Medical School, Boston MA

The Center for the History of Medicine, Francis A. Countway Library, Harvard Medical School is currently seeking applications for 2 LHT (less than half time/17 hours per week) positions:  (1) to support Center acquisitions, accessioning, and processing work (Processing Assistant) and (1) to engage Harvard Medical School’s Longwood community around, and seek contributions for, the Center’s Strong Medicine: The Healing Response to the 2013 Marathon Bombing online Omeka collection, which will be launched in November (Project Assistant). Processing Assistants re-house unique manuscript and archival materials, create folder lists, carry out preservation photocopying and other preservation tasks, work with rare books cataloging staff, complete data entry and administrative tasks, and intellectually contribute to catalog records, EAD/XML finding aids, and other retrieval tools as required.

 

Project Assistants work to promote Center initiatives, develop community contacts, build collection content, and engage students, staff, and faculty around specific initiatives.

 

Requirements: Completion of one or more classes in an ALA-accredited academic program and/or M.A. program with an archival concentration. Flexibility, versatility, and tolerance for change are essential, as is the ability to both work independently and in team environments. LHTS are required to periodically move and lift heavy cartons up to 40 pounds and spend significant time at a keyboard.  Employees must also be tolerant of library-related allergens.

 

The duration of both appointments is currently being determined.

 

Compensation: $14.00/hour
