Job Summary:
Performs all duties related to the circulation of library materials, including assisting patrons in the use of self-check technologies, locating materials through the Evergreen Catalog, placing holds, registering patrons for library cards and collecting fines and fees.
Supervision Received:
Works under the supervision of the Head of Circulation Services
Supervision Exercised:
Provides supervision of Circulation staff in the absence of the Head of Circulation Services
Provides direction to page and volunteer staff
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops and maintains the weekly work schedule for Circulation staff.
- Schedules all leave time for the Circulation staff.
- Participates in the interview, hiring and selection process for new employees.
- Assists the Head of Circulation Services in managing the daily activities of the circulation area.
- Manages the Fiction Audiobook and MP3 collections.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides library patrons with service and attention in a pleasant and helpful manner. Uses the library OPAC to assist patrons with title, author, and subject searches. Assists patrons in placing reserves. Refers patrons to the staff person best able to provide assistance.
- Assists patrons in the use of self-check technology. Resolves bills and other delinquencies.
- Registers new patrons and enters patron information into the database; provides introduction to self-check and AMH systems during the registration process; explains library services to new patrons.
- Assists patrons in booking Museum Passes and Meeting Rooms via the OPAC. Maintains the booking module and circulates museum passes through the module.
- Handles all aspects of MLS delivery, including contact with the Massachusetts Library System and Optima Delivery Services. Completes surveys and delivery studies; communicates delivery problems to provider. Processes reserve materials and notifies patron when materials are ready.
- Empties the AMH bins and shelves materials in order in the designated shelving area; checks the condition of materials and routes materials to appropriate departments for further evaluation as necessary.
- Provides Reader’s Advisory services by helping patrons select fiction, audio and ebooks; stocks and merchandises the “new book” and “staff recommends” shelves; assists in creating displays.
- Opens and closes the Main Desk area, including managing the cash register and ensuring that the area is ready for the day.
- Handles telephone calls directed to the department and routes other calls as necessary.
- Performs other duties as required.
Physical Demands:
1. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to bend and stoop, to use hands to manipulate objects and materials, and to reach with hands and arms.
2. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk on a frequent basis.
3. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Three to five years experience in a public service environment (public library preferred) is required.
2. General knowledge of computers and technology (as they relate to libraries) is required.
3. Four-year college degree is required.

2. Ability to express oneself clearly, concisely and pleasantly in the English language, in person, over the phone, and in writing.
3. Ability to handle minute detail.
4. Accurate typing and word processing skills; knowledge of MS Office systems.
5. Ability to learn new skills quickly.
6. Ability to handle situations with tact, courtesy, initiative, resourcefulness, and good judgment.
