Catalogers, Art Cataloging Project, Boston MA

We are looking for 2 or 3  students, faculty and/or graduates to catalog approximately 250-300 individual works of art now in storage in 14 units at the Fortress self-storage facility in Dorchester (just off the SE Expressway – the building with the huge foam lock and chain on it).  The collection is mostly made up of framed prints and lithographs, with some original paintings and some bronze statutes.  Each item is individually wrapped in bubble wrap and brown paper.  The project would involve the careful unwrapping of each piece,  photographing each piece (including the certificates of authenticity on the back of the prints, lithographs and paintings) preparing a list of the items including artist, medium, and title,  annotated to show which photos belong to which piece, and then the careful rewrapping of each piece.  The Fortress will bring each unit down to a lobby and provide an adjoining  small conference room with a table and easel.  They will not, however, provide any labor, so the project team will have to carry each piece from the unit to the conference room (about 50 feet) perform the cataloging, rewrap each piece and return them to the unit.

The position is $20 per hour for a 2 or 3 day project for 3 people (one to move, unwrap and rewrap the pieces, one to take photos and one to do the recording of data) but we are open to suggestions from interested people.  We need people who understand the need to take care in the handling of works of art and the need to establish an accurate record of what the collection consists of.  Although there is no hard deadline for completion of this project, I would like it to be done sooner rather than later.
