Library Assistant (PT), Gladys E. Kelly Public Library, Webster, MA

Statement of Duties:  

Circulation Desk duties include greeting Library users and performing all Circulation Desk activities, answering phone calls, assisting patrons with Library resources and technology, and answering directional and other basic reference questions. Duties also include assisting with collection development, processing, and maintenance.

This is a part-time non-benefited position. This position may include daytime or an evening shift as well as some Saturday hours each month.

Supervision:  

Works under broad supervision using established procedures and oral instruction from the Library Director or Assistant Director. Regularly works on the Circulation Desk and may perform assigned tasks under supervision of the Assistant Director.  Occasionally, may work unsupervised and be expected to solve problems and serve library users independently.  Refers any issues and problems to the Library Director and/or Assistant Director.

Job Environment:

  • Work is performed collaboratively as part of a highly energetic and creative team.
  • Circulation Desk duties are performed in a public service area that is usually very active with frequent interruptions.
  • The incumbent has frequent contact with the public for the purpose of answering questions at the Circulation Desk, and via telephone and email.
  • Daily work is performed with computers, printers, fax machine, copiers, telephone, and other standard office equipment.
  • This is a public-facing position and requires appropriate business-casual attire and a customer service mindset.

Essential Functions:

  • Uses Library automated circulation system to circulate materials to library users including checking materials in and out, processing reserves/holds, registering borrowers, and collecting fees.
  • Serves all library users at all public service desks as needed, and answers basic reference questions, or refers patrons to staff who is able to assist them.
  • Processes book deliveries, holds, and fulfills paging list requests as needed.
  • Creates and maintains confidential patron records.
  • Participates in Collection Development and materials selection, in accordance with Library policy, as needed.
  • Assists in technical service duties such as processing material for Circulation as needed.
  • Deals tactfully and courteously with public.
  • Maintains confidentiality of library users’ records.
  • Assists the public in the use of technology, with ability to perform basic troubleshooting.
  • Contributes to Library marketing, such as the newsletter, as needed.
  • Attends staff meetings, conferences, trainings, and workshops as required.
  • Assists with opening and closing procedures as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience: 

  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Strong technology skills, including office equipment, are essential.
  • Experience working with diverse, multicultural populations.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks and responsibilities within established timeframes.
  • Previous Library user experience and experience with our network catalog a plus.
  • Experience working a Library is preferred.
  • Bilingual abilities a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Strong technology skills are essential.
  • Must enjoy working with the public and thrive on creating healthy interpersonal connections.
  • Must have the ability to work well in a team environment with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to make minor decisions in accordance with library policies and procedures.
  • Proven public service skills and ability and desire to work effectively with patrons of diverse backgrounds with a wide variety of needs and abilities.
