Assistant Library Director II, Newburgh Free Library, Newburgh, NY

The Newburgh Free Library is seeking a motivated, well-organized, and forward-thinking Assistant Library Director II. The ideal candidate will have strong operational know-how, experience managing a large staff, knowledge of New York State Law as it pertains to public libraries, and the ability to communicate effectively and seek consensus. 

Salary range: $85,000 – $95,000 depending on experience. Health insurance, vision, dental, and participation in the New York State Retirement System. Employees receive generous vacation, sick leave, flex days, and personal time.

SUMMARY:
The Newburgh Free Library is seeking a motivated, well-organized, and forward-thinking
Assistant Library Director II. The ideal candidate will have strong operational know-how,
experience managing a large staff, knowledge of New York State Law as it pertains to public
libraries, and the ability to communicate effectively and seek consensus.
The work of the Assistant Library Director II is almost entirely administrative and involves
responsibility, under the general direction of the Library Director III, for assigned phases of
library administration. The position requires a flexible schedule which may include night and
weekend activities. Work is performed in accordance with prescribed policy with considerable
leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.
In the heart of Newburgh, overlooking the Hudson River, the Newburgh Free Library serves a
diverse community of approximately 60,000 people. The Library also serves as the Central
Library for the Ramapo Catskill Library System.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
● Oversee the work of public service staff, which may include: Adult Services; Youth
Services; Community Engagement and Outreach; User Services; and Technical Services
● Work closely with the Library Director to develop policy and procedures
● Assists in planning, implementation and evaluation of long and short-term goals and
objectives
● Participates in recruitment, selection, training and evaluation of employees
● Keeps informed of professional developments through participation in professional
organizations, system meetings, workshops, and reading professional materials
● Participates in preparation of the Library budget
● Researches, writes, and submits grants for library programs, services, and projects in
consultation with the Library Director.
● Supervises the Library in Director’s absence.
● Performs other related responsibilities as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
● MLS from from an ALA accredited university or recognized by the New York State
Education Department as following acceptable education methods
● At least four (4) years of satisfactory professional library experience, one (1) or more
years of which must have been in an administrative or supervisory capacity
● Eligibility for a New York State public librarian’s professional certificate at time of
application for appointment; possession of certificate at time of appointment
● Thorough knowledge of library administration practices
● Thorough knowledge of modern library organizations, procedures, policies, trends, and
services
● Ability to plan and coordinate the work of others
● Strong leadership and motivational skills
● Extensive knowledge of the applications of computer technology to library operations
