About the Role 

The Project Archivist will work closely with the BSO Archives and Orchestra Library staff to carry out a Save America’s Treasures grant funded project to digitize the BSO Library’s historical bound scores and performance parts dating from the late 19th/early 20th century.

This position will be a 25-month, full time position.


Job Responsibilities:

  • 2500+ marked orchestral scores and performance parts will be digitized in six batches over the course of 25 months. 
  • The project archivist will inventory scores, assign unique identifier numbers to each score or set of parts (this will serve as the trunk for the digital file name), populate spreadsheet with descriptive metadata, and carefully pack up scores for delivery to the digitization vendor. Following digitization, the project archivist will unpack and check back in scores and then will check digital images against original source materials. 
  • The project archivist will keep track the location of scores throughout the course of the project.  Following the quality assurance work, the project archivist will work with the BSO’s Associate Archivist for Digital Assets to upload preservation files to the BSO’s SNS Server and access files with descriptive metadata to the BSO’s Digital Asset Management System. 
  • Position reports to the Director of Archives and Digital Collections; and interfaces with Associate Archivist of Digital Assets, and Principal Librarian

Required Education and Experience

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent degree and/or certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists Archival
  • Demonstrated experience in the care and handing of historical materials
  • Proven adeptness with metadata schema, spreadsheets, and digital asset management systems and experience with PDF, JPEG, and Tiff file formats. 
  • Able to work independently; ability to set priorities and meet deadlines; and demonstrate a strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to life a minimum of 40 pounds and be comfortable packing and unpacking boxes. 
  • Candidates with a working knowledge of classical music and/or music librarianship experience will be given preference
