POSITION OVERVIEW

School Historian:

The St. Catherine’s School Archives serves as the central repository for historical records of all aspects of the school community. The school historian collects, evaluates, preserves and makes accessible a wide range of primary source material related to the school’s administrative, academic and social history. Engaging with alumnae, various internal departments, and outreach to classes to disseminate the school’s history centers the school historian’s work.

Advanced Placement Coordinator:

St. Catherine’s offers 24 AP Courses and administers AP tests on site. There are minor preliminary organizational pieces throughout the school year with the largest concentration of time spent overseeing the administration of tests during the designated three weeks of testing in May. Attention to detail and an understanding of the AP rules are important skills for this job.

Position Status: 9- month, part-time, non exempt, 20 hour per week position

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF SCHOOL HISTORIAN

  • Catalog and digitize existing and new materials using Re:Discovery software with the purpose of documenting existing holdings and increasing user access and discovery;
  • Solicit, record and transcribe specific alumnae and/or faculty memories in video or audio format;
  • Maintain up-to-date records on the physical art and objects acquired or gifted to the school, including outreach to local vendors offering conservation and care of school-owned property, and proper documentation and valuations for insurance;
  • Work closely with Alumnae & Development, Communications, Athletics, and the Head’s Office to mine materials and assemble relevant collections of information that fit with upcoming events, displays, and publications;
  • Support lessons on school history as well as one-on-one consultations with students pursuing projects related to the history of St. Catherine’s School;
  • Support the librarians by occasionally working at the front desk and interacting with students;
  • Handle external requests from outside researchers, including alumnae, genealogists, and researchers;
  • Maintain and foster relationships with nonprofit organizations like the Library of Virginia, and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture;
  • Maintain a collaborative relationship with St. Christopher’s School and Church Schools to support their initiatives and goals and to understand how their histories impact St. Catherine’s History.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF AP COORDINATOR

  • Assist faculty and students in registering for AP classes and confirming course offerings with the College Board;
  • Work with the Registrar to track students enrolled in AP course;.
  • Oversee all logistics of administering AP exams, including collaboration with faculty and operations staff;
  • May have other duties as assigned.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in history or women’s studies (or commensurate experience grounding the applicant in historical standards) required. Candidates with a Masters of Information Science with Archives specialization, Archives certificate, or who are currently pursuing an Archives degree, preferred.
  • Experience with conservation and preservation
  • Knowledge of cataloging databases or similar platforms
  • Familiarity with digital preservation and scanning techniques
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple requests and projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
