Summer library Assistant, Multi-Department, Hampton, NH

A successful candidate will have:

  • High school diploma or GED, minimum
  • $13/hour
  • Start Monday, June 12th, End Friday August 18th
  • Outstanding customer service skills
  • A high degree of familiarity with computers
  • No sick or vacation benefits
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Necessary to work collegially with others,
  • Broad knowledge of fiction genres and authors
  • Library experience required

A Summer Library Assistant will perform any of the following general and specialized desk duties when necessary and other duties as requested. A standard background check will be required.

General Desk Duties

  • Follow Lane Memorial Library General and Personnel policies
  • Assist with opening and closing building
  • Empty book drop
  • Greet library users
  • Answer telephone and route calls to individual staff members
  • Maintain circulation records including check-outs and check-ins
  • Update and process fees
  • Collect payment for a variety of library services and Friends of the Library events
  • Place and retrieve reserves
  • Maintain collection of library materials, shelving returned items in their proper places
  • Perform circulation desk duties alone as needed
  • Register new patrons
  • Support and communicate library policies and procedures to library users
  • Assist library users with use of the PAC, photocopier, and computer terminals
  • Accept inter-library loan requests and new materials requests
  • Maintain circulation desk areas to provide a convenient and safe work area
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Keep abreast of any changes and updated information
    Specialized Duties
  • Manage and publicize programming, including story times, performances, and special events
  • Assist with management of annual Summer Reading Program
  • Assist with the presentation of regular season, holiday, or special event displays in the Children’s Room (including holiday book
    carts)
  • Process new items for circulation (books, CDs, DVDs, puzzles, puppets, etc.)
  • Crafts: planning, coordinating, producing
  • Plan/change announcements for outside sign
  • Assist patrons with research and reference questions in the Children’s area
  • Maintain appearance and organization of the library, including tidying furniture, toys, puppets, puzzles, etc.

Physical requirements:

  • Stand and work at a service desk for up to 4 hours per day
  • Reach up to high shelves (possibly using a stool) or down to lowest shelves (possibly kneeling)
  • Lift and sort up to 30 pounds of library materials
  • Maneuver a full book cart through the library stacks
  • Read a computer screen at arm’s length
  • Listen and respond clearly to inquiries from patrons in the library as well as on the telephone
  • Work outdoors; often in high heat and perform physically strenuous activities
