Archives Assistant, City of Cambridge Historical Commission, MA

The City of Cambridge Historical Commission is seeing an Archives Assistant to assist the
Commission Archivist and Digital Projects Archivist with tasks associated with maintaining,
housing, and describing the Historical Commission’s dynamic archival collection and research
library.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Create preliminary inventories.
  • Conduct minor preservation tasks.
  • Research biographical information and write collection finding aids.
  • Rehouse and arrange manuscript, photo, and artifact collections.
  • Contribute to CHC social media accounts.
  • Digitize photographic materials and manuscripts.
  • Catalogue books using Library of Congress call numbers.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for CHC’s mission and a desire to support practices of inclusive accessibility in processing and description.
  • Knowledge of professional archival and cataloging standards
  • Meticulous and detail-oriented
  • Excellent communication skills

PREFERRED:

  • Experience with ArchivesSpace, digitization, Photoshop, and Adobe programs is ideal but not required.
  • Applicants should preferably have completed significant coursework in pursuit of an MLS degree or have 1-2 years of experience working in an archive or special collections library.

RATE: $20/hour. Sick leave eligible; otherwise this is a non-benefitted position.

HOURS OF WORK: 19 hours per week for 8 months. Continued employment is contingent on
renewed grant funding. may be eligible for hybrid work under the City’s new Telework Policy,
depending on operational needs.
