Library Assistant Director, Winchester Public Library, Winchester, MA

The Winchester Public Library is seeking an experienced, technically-skilled and well-organized professional librarian to assist the Library Director in administrative and supervisory duties in the management of the Library. Position reports to the Library Director.

Duties of the Assistant Director include but are not limited to:

  • overseeing the library’s connection to the Minuteman Library Network, the Library’s LAN, website, and all related equipment, peripherals and policies;
  • acting as the Library’s liaison to the Friends of the Library and including attending monthly Friends board meetings and assisting with Friends programs;
  • coordinating and managing the library volunteers and various volunteer committees;
  • participating in collection development;
  • coordinating adult programming including marketing and social media
  • with the Director managing the day-to-day operations of the physical plant; coordinating the purchase or repair of furniture, equipment, and signage;
  • active participation in network committees and new developments in technology which affect library operations;
  • participation in hiring process and in long range planning process

The Winchester Public Library is a member of the Minuteman Library Network, has 21.2 FTE’s, and has continued regaining ground in stats from COVID closures, including circulating approximately 350,000 items last year and welcoming over 130,000 visitors. Winchester is located 8 miles north of Boston and is accessible by public transportation.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution
  • Minimum five years of professional public library experience at progressively responsible levels, including three years in a supervisory capacity
  • Experience working with community groups

Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and written and oral communication
  • Current principles and practices of modern public library management
  • Knowledge of LANs, internet and wireless systems, hardware and software applications
  • Ability to deal calmly with stressful situations; ability to represent the Library in a positive and professional manner
  • Attention to detail, well-organized, able to prioritize and delegate

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to operate a keyboard, view a computer monitor, and use a variety of technology and equipment on a regular basis
  • Light physical effort generally required
  • Routinely required to talk and hear, including but not limited to in-person, on the phone, and virtually; specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Salary Range: $76,313 – $113,623 in 17 steps. Candidates can expect to start lower to mid range. Full benefits package.
