The person in this position collaborates with library colleagues and campus partners and has responsibility for the coordination of library outreach services to the faculty, students, and staff, primarily in the area of library instruction. Coordinates the University Libraries library instruction programs including: integrating information literacy into the university curriculum; coordinating the library’s instructional programs for on-campus and remote users; training library staff in best practices for instruction; serving as the training coordinator and instructional design consultant for the University Libraries.

Other outreach efforts may include promoting the understanding, use, adoption, and creation of Open Educational Resources (OER) as an alternative resource, as appropriate, for teaching and learning or working with the First Year Experience program to introduce undergraduates to library services.

In addition, the person in this position serves as a liaison librarian to 1-4 academic units and hires, trains, and supervises 1-2 Graduate Library Preprofessionals (GLP) in RIS.

Salary range – $57,000-$62,000

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates the Libraries’ program of library instruction to meet the changing needs of faculty and students. Works with library colleagues to create both synchronous and asynchronous instructional materials and programs that meet the needs of the academic units the Libraries serve. Coordinates the design and development of online tutorials, research guides, user documentation, and best practices via the Libraries’ website, Blackboard, and 3rd party software. Submits annual statistics on library instruction sessions.
  • Serves as liaison librarian to 1-4 academic units, supporting the needs of those units through library instruction, research assistance, and promotion of the wide array of library services.
  • Manages operations and staffing at the Information Desk. Selects, trains, and supervises part-time and other non-regular staff; adjusts and updates the policies and procedures manual; manages the reference collection in the first floor Reading Room.
  • Participates as a generalist and subject specialist in the provision of reference and research assistance to individual users.
  • Selects and develops our collections of print and electronic resources for assigned subject disciplines.
  • Promotes the understanding, use, adoption, and creation of OER as an alternative resource, as appropriate, for teaching and learning.
  • Promotes the Libraries through social media messaging, blog posts, outreach to faculty, and similar outlets.
  • Participates as a professional member in the University Libraries with academic status, in shared collegial decision making and planning; participates in committees and ad hoc projects; contributes to the library profession and engage in professional development activities; participates in and contribute to professional organizations and publications. 

Qualifications:

A Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution is required. Additional academic experience in instructional design and research methods is strongly preferred.

Three (3) to four (4) years of demonstrated experience planning and developing in-person and online instructional sessions, as well as two (2) to three (3) years of experience in both library instruction and reference services are required.

Ability to raise awareness of data literacy, data resources, and data services.

Knowledge and awareness of current academic issues as they affect library resources, operations and services, specifically issues related to library instruction and information literacy.  Knowledge of instructional design concepts and principles of user-oriented design. Knowledge of reference, and research resources and services; skill in using common computer software applications; knowledge of the Internet and electronic resources.  Skill in individual and group instruction; skill in the development of library instruction programs and instructional materials. Applied knowledge of emerging information technologies.

Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing; especially with different library user groups; ability to anticipate future service needs and plan accordingly; strong service orientation.
