Senior Youth Services Librarian, Norfolk Public Library, MA

This position reports to the Director and performs administrative and professional work
responsible for the development and implementation of the Library’s services and activities for
children and young adults. This role is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Youth
Department, provides leadership for improving public library services to the community,
represents the library during different outreach events, and performs all other related work as
required. The candidate who fills this role will have a strong ability to work with children,
students, parents, Town organizations, departments, and officials.

Essential Functions:

  • Plans, oversees, and implements library programs for children and young adults.
  • Selects materials for and maintains juvenile and young adult collections.
  • Seeks out, administers, and implements grants.
  • Provides reference services.
  • Responsible for marketing youth programs and services which involves the utilization of social media, newsletters, and other forms of community outreach.
  • Performs website updates for the Youth Department; utilizes web-based email and performs calendar scheduling.
  • Represents the library at appropriate regional and state boards.
  • Conducts library orientation tours and programs for community groups and agencies.
  • Performs outreach programs that include schools and other community events.
  • Keeps informed of children’s and young adult issues and developments in the profession through advanced study, reading professional literature, and attending professional conferences.
  • Executes passport processing.
  • Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or as situation dictates.

Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school, three to five (3-5) years of
related experience in a public or school library serving children and young adults that includes
supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience
with children and public library experience preferred.

Schedule:

This full-time position is a 37.5 hours per week position and will require one evening per week
and some weekend work as determined by the weekend staff schedule rotation.
