Digital Media Assistant, Harvard University (Widener Library), Cambridge, MA

Access Services actively supports the mission of the Harvard Library by delivering a high standard of service; cultivating a welcoming environment that is supportive to academic research and inquiry; stewarding the university collection; and connecting the academic community to the vast array of library resources. We support the teaching and scholarly mission of the University through collaborative partnerships with the community of students, scholars, and professionals at Harvard and beyond.

We are hiring part-time staff to join the Digital Reserves team based in Widener Library. This position will report to the Digital Reserves Manager. The position is scheduled for 14 hours a week. The schedule for the position is flexible, but the hours must fall within:

Schedule 

Monday – Thursday, 9am – 10pm;

Friday, 9am – 7pm

Duties:

Digital Media

  • Create access to digital media for students, as requested by instructors.
    • Convert video from VHS, DVD, and Blu-Ray formats to a digital format appropriate for streaming.
    • Upload properly-encoded media files to a cloud-based staging area.
    • Work within the Canvas LMS (Learning Management System) and Panopto to post links to media files.
    • Work with manager to create and maintain a repository and catalog for digitized media, complete with standard naming conventions and metadata for digital items.

Course Reserves

  • Create access to digital text-based materials, as requested by instructors.
    • Work within JIRA (a type of project-tracking software) to update the status of requested reserve materials and to communicate with other library staff members.
    • Scan sections of books and create PDF files.
    • Assist the Reserves Coordinator in the following activities: receiving books and moving them into the appropriate workflow, taking books to the Imaging Services department to be scanned, working within Alma to update work order statuses, and creating documentation.

Additional Work, as required

  • During periods when the above work is limited, assist with other workflows related to digital course reserves and access services.
    • Scan sections of books and journals for Scan & Deliver and Accessibility needs.
    • Help to keep materials in the physical workspace organized.
    • Work with Widener’s Collection Maintenance team to shelve books within the general collection.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent work experience required
  • Facility with standard office software (Microsoft Word and Excel, email, calendaring applications, etc.) required
  • Ability to understand of video formats and AudioVideo interfaces.
  • Ability to repair failed processes within a workflow involving computer hardware and software.

Additional Qualifications

  • Ability to successfully deliver excellent customer service and prioritize service needs in a busy, dynamic public service environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
