Assistant Director (Full-Time), Patten Free Library, Bath, ME

Description:

The Patten Free Library, located in Bath, Maine, is a private non-profit library that serves the City of Bath and the Towns of Arrowsic, Georgetown, West Bath, and Woolwich.  (Total population served is app. 15,279.) Under the general supervision of the Library Director, the Assistant Director supervises and coordinates the work of the reference staff, the circulation staff, the Interlibrary Loan Coordinator, and the Technical Services Coordinator.  The Assistant Director is also responsible for managing technology systems in the Library and assists the Director in planning for future technology needs.  The Assistant Director works with the Director, Trustees, Corporators, Friends of PFL, volunteers, and community members to further the Library’s mission. In the absence of the Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for the management of library operations.

Salary: $60,000-$64,000 based on experience

Responsibilities:

  • Supervises staff in Reference, Circulation, Interlibrary Loan, and Technical Services. Provides oversight on staff hours and expenditures for these departments. Conducts annual performance reviews for staff in these departments.
  • Recruits and hires library staff for the Circulation and Reference departments, and assists the Director with recruitment and hiring for other library positions that they supervise.
  • Works with the Reference Team Coordinator to oversee and coordinate collection development responsibilities. May be responsible for some materials selection.
  • Manages the technology systems and performs troubleshooting as needed.  Works with outside IT support to resolve technology issues.  
  • Manages the recruitment and assignment of volunteers.
  • Participates in library fundraising activities. 
  • Assists the Director in developing and administering library policies and procedures.
  • Updates the Emergency Plan as needed and coordinates regular staff training in these areas.
  • Coordinates staff meetings and schedules required staff professional development and training.
  • Attends board meetings, participates in board committees, and assists with preparation of monthly board reports.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, Friends of PFL, Corporators, Trustees, and community groups.

Qualifications and Expectations:

  • A Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited library school.
  • Five years of progressively responsible library administration experience including at least three years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of public library principles, practices and methods, modern library organizations, and library administration practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working effectively with staff, patrons, volunteers, donors, and the general public. 
  • Excellent technology skills.   Understanding of computer networks a plus.
