Instructional Librarian and Geographer-at-Large, Oliver Wendell Holmes Library at Phillips Academy Andover, Andover, MA

The Oliver Wendell Holmes Library at Phillips Academy Andover seeks a personable, energetic, creative, and self-directed individual to become a member of our Instructional Librarian Team and be our Geographer-at-Large. The successful candidate will be responsible for working with colleagues to improve instruction and reference services, enhance student learning in traditional and online environments, and maintain subject collections in assigned liaison areas.

As an Instructional Librarian, the candidate will:

  • Participate in the library’s instruction program, which includes planning, teaching, and assessing teacher-requested instruction sessions.
  • Provide reference and research assistance to the community.
  • Create and maintain online instructional materials and content for the OWHL’s online presence.
  • Plan and develop outreach initiatives including but not limited to displays, workshops,     programs, and community engagement activities.
  • Identify and select materials for purchase in given subject areas.
  • Participate in professional development activities.


In fulfilling the role of the Geographer-at-Large, the candidate will:

  • Report to and collaborate with the Director of Archives and Special Collections to manage and curate the Sidney R. Knafel Map Collection.
  • Manage outside requests to access the collection digitally and/or in person.
  • Collaborate with teaching faculty to prepare lessons and projects that make effective pedagogical use of the collection.
  • Work closely with the Dean of Studies, the chairs of History and Social Science and other academic departments, the Tang Institute, and other internal and external persons and entities.
  • Collaborate with the Donor Relations Office to provide thoughtful stewardship to the Knafel Family about the activities of the Geographer-at-Large and the impact of the collection at the Academy and beyond.

Salary range: 75-85k

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in one of the following disciplines from an accredited institution: library and/or information science, history, or social science.
  • Three to five years of experience in, and enthusiasm for, developing and teaching effective library instruction sessions and curricula.
  • Ability to communicate about current information and emerging technologies.
  • Current experience in providing reference services and conducting one-on-one reference interviews.
  • Knowledge of major databases used in an academic environment.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team environment.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Availability to work weeknights and weekends.

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous experience with Springshare.
