Library Assistant (Children’s Room), Wayland Free Public Library Wayland, MA

Description:

Part-time temporary position working in the Children’s Department of a busy, medium-sized public library which prides itself on superior customer service. Helps children and families locate materials and information. Performs various tasks relating to the circulation of children’s materials, including but not limited to checking books in and out, collecting fines, answering patron queries, assigning new library cards to patrons, and other duties as necessary. Must be willing to pick up additional hours as needed. May do programing for pre-school and/or elementary aged children. May be assigned responsibilities related to the opening and closing of the library facility.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:  

Library school coursework and/or experience working with children required. A working knowledge of children’s literature preferred. Familiarity with Sierra software preferred. Experience in a circulation department/tech services department and/or a children’s room of a public library preferred. The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated ability to interact with children and adults with patience and discretion, as well as excellent organizational talents and attention to detail. Good written and oral communication skills are essential, as is the capacity to work efficiently and energetically. Familiarity with Microsoft Office a plus. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates and the general public. Ability to work both independently and as a team member. Willingness to learn new skills. Tact, diplomacy, and flexibility a must.

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically capable of shelving books: ability to lift, bend, kneel, stoop, and be able to push a book cart weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to operate a keyboard at efficient speed and sit at a computer for long periods of time.  Specific vision requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus

Part-Time: 25 hours per week, some evenings and 2 Saturdays a month

Temporary (12 weeks)

Grade: Non-Union Paraprofessional 

Wages: $23.30 – $28.53 per hour no benefits
