DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the access services supervisor, the access services associate: evening supervisor oversees nighttime operations of the library during the academic year and summer programs.  The associate performs a variety of public service and clerical duties as a member of the library’s access services department, and is the lead person responsible for stacks maintenance of the library collection, which includes support of the game collection, in consultation with the research and instruction librarian for science and social science.

One of three full-time staff members responsible for oversight of the InfoBar. Supervises and trains student circulation assistants with other access services staff and assists in all general circulation services. Standard Schedule: Sunday 11:30am-7:30pm, Monday – Thursday 2:00pm-10:00pm. Hours vary in the summer and during breaks, and schedule is subject to change as the needs of the library evolve.    

InfoBar duties include answering questions about library procedures and equipment, checking library materials in and out, registering patrons, placing holds, and running reports. In addition, the associate manages the print reserve collection, working with faculty and other Five College Reserve staff to obtain loans of materials needed for course reserves and cataloging them within our Integrated Library System (ILS) in preparation for use by the Hampshire College community. This position is also responsible for all functions related to patrons’ library bills and fines, including processing bills from the online library system; preparing manual bills and fines for lost, damaged and recalled materials; checking bills for errors; transmitting bills to financial services and/or other Five College libraries; and answering users’ billing questions.

The associate processes Interlibrary Loans one day a week, and as needed to assist the access services associate: interlibrary loan.  The associate contributes content for the library’s social media accounts.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

ESSENTIAL

  • Background in troubleshooting library systems.
  • The ability to work a flexible schedule that includes nights and weekends.
  • The ability to travel as needed to participate in consortia and professional meetings and events.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • The ability to be proactive and initiate projects or other work.
  • Excellent written and communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.
  • Enthusiastic service orientation with sensitivity to the needs of users at all skill levels; the ability to convey technical information to a non-technical audience is essential.
  • The ability to maintain a professional and tactful approach in all interactions, ensuring confidentiality and an individual’s right to privacy regarding appropriate information.
  • Flexibility to accept, manage and incorporate change and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • A thorough understanding of established billing principles, library methods and procedures, and the use of common library tools.
  • Comfort with numbers and the processing of financial information.
  • A commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds is essential.
  • Supports and enhances a sense of belonging and success of students from traditionally marginalized populations.

PREFERRED

  • A strong record of progressively responsible supervisory experience directly related to duties and responsibilities of the position, preferably in an academic environment.
  • Experience with e-resource access and maintenance procedures and generating statistical reports.
  • Proficiency with A/V software.
  • Familiarity with graphic design software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Spark, and Canva.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate’s degree required.
  • Two years minimum circulation, reserves, or other relevant library experience.

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
