Library and Archives Specialist, Historic New England, Boston, MA

Historic New England seeks a Library and Archives Specialist to work as part of library and archives team on accessioning, processing, cataloguing and digitizing collections and maintaining archival collections storage. The Library and Archives Specialist provides reference services to the public by means of online access, research appointments, and written and oral communication via email and telephone. The position enters new acquisitions into the accessions database for collections committee review, completes deeds of gifts, and coordinates all rights and reproduction requests for Historic New England images. Additionally, the Library and Archives Specialist is responsible for all image acquisitions for Historic New England publications and exhibitions, provides access to archival collection areas for contractors and staff, manages the archival and office supplies, and orders and maintains annual book prize list.

Qualifications:

Requires an ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or a History and Archives concentration, and a minimum of one year job-related experience. Must have experience with digitization, archival practices and standards including DACS, MARC, and knowledge of EAD. Must have experience with collection management databases and digital assessment management practices. This employee will be able to operate effectively in a team environment, where communication (oral and written) within and among teams is essential to success. Requires problem solving skills, ability to work cooperatively, and ability to effectively plan and implement work processes to meet daily, weekly, and monthly deadlines. Candidate must exercise sound judgment. Requires fully competent computer skills including use of MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel spreadsheet functions, and shared drive applications, including Dropbox. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, digital photography, and metadata standards a plus.

Work Environment:

This is an hourly, non-exempt position, scheduled for 40 hours per week. Weekend and evening work is periodically required; the library and archives is open the first Saturday of April, May, June, October, November, and December. The position requires travel between the Haverhill Facility and Otis House, and occasional travel to Historic New England sites throughout New England. A valid driver’s license and a means of transportation are required.

As typically performed, this position regularly involves talking, hearing, sitting, standing, walking and bending/stooping.  This position also involves lifting up to 40 pounds and the ability to handle, lift, and move boxes of books and archival material.  The employee must perform functions including keyboarding and basic electronic and paper database and file management, each of which typically requires manual dexterity in combination with eye-hand coordination.  The employee must be able to communicate clearly.  The position also requires constantly reading documents for general understanding.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
