Engineering Research & Instruction Librarian, Tufts University, Medford, MA

This is an exciting opportunity to join a group of creative and collaborative librarians as part of the Sciences, Social Sciences & Engineering Team in the Tisch Library at Tufts.

The Tisch Library at Tufts University supports teaching, learning, and the creation and dissemination of scholarship in the School of Arts & Sciences and School of Engineering.  With an ambitious strategic plan and research agenda, Tufts is a dynamic institution rising in prominence.  Through the provision of collections, subject expertise, and technology-rich research and learning environments, Tisch Library plays a critical role in advancing the mission of the University. The Research & Instruction Department develops and provides services to meet the information needs of students, faculty, and staff.

The Engineering Librarian works to support the school mission to “develop and disseminate transformational new knowledge and technologies that further the well-being and sustainability of society.” Of primary importance is a commitment to users, passion for teaching, and an enthusiastic willingness to learn. Reporting to the Team Lead for Sciences and Social Sciences, the successful candidate will design, teach, and assess information literacy instruction, including digital, data, and scholarly communication literacies, for the School of Engineering (SOE). S/he will provide research consultations, participate in services and programs that support research and scholarship, and offer collection development support for SOE disciplines.  Hallmarks of success will include building strong partnerships, deepening engagement, contributing to strategic user-focused projects and initiatives, and leveraging technology to collaborate with students, faculty, and staff.  As a member of the Research & Instruction Department, this librarian will participate in the First Year Education Program, provide reference services, serve on Tisch Library and interlibrary teams, and help build an educational environment reflecting Tufts’ commitment to diversity and inclusion.

 

Required qualifications:

  • Master of Library Science or equivalent degree
  • Interest in teaching, learning, and research environments in engineering
  • Demonstrated teaching ability, including an understanding of pedagogical approaches that encourage exploration, critical thinking, and empower students to direct their own learning
  • Awareness of the library’s role in social justice efforts in higher education and an ability to work effectively with a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff
  • Desire to learn user needs, recommend solutions to continuously improve library service, and create an compelling, holistic user experience in the library
  • Demonstrated awareness of current trends in academic libraries
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with engineers in an academic or research environment
  • Familiarity with problem/project-based curricula or service learning environments
  • Coursework and/or experience in providing instruction in the sciences or engineering
  • Familiarity with scholarly communication and research data management practices in the sciences or engineering
  • Undergraduate degree concentrated in the sciences or engineering, or equivalent knowledge of the disciplines
  • Familiarity with technical information formats such as engineering standards, technical reports, or patents
  • Experience with collection development work
