Library Assistant, Osterville Village Library, Osterville, MA

Definition

The Library Assistant is a key support position for both the Youth and Adult Services departments.  The incumbent performs a wide variety of patron support services and supports the overall mission of the library.  This is an ideal position for someone in library school or considering library school to have an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a busy public library working with two librarians.  This is a part time position, and the target start date is July 1st, 2016.

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily at the children’s desk and other areas as assigned.  The employee operates standard library equipment, computers, and related software applications required to perform their duties as a Library Assistant.  The employee has access to confidential patron records and shall maintain the privacy of these records.  The individual has regular contact with library patrons.  Communication is performed in person, by phone, fax, email, in writing, and through standard and special reports.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities            

  • Promotes community awareness of library services and programs through planning and appropriate communications with the media and other community organizations.
  • Assist in maintenance of the Library website, online calendar, and social media pages to promote Library programs and services. 
  • Develops, designs, and produces publicity materials; creates flyers, brochures, and other marketing tools, including displays for programs and services. 
  • Serves as desktop publishing resource for staff and provides assistance with desktop publishing projects.
  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons of all ages.
  • Performs basic library circulation services such as placing holds, collection of fines/fees, issuing library cards, maintaining patron records, shelving, checking in/out library materials, and assisting patrons with locating items.
  • Assists patrons in the use of library catalog and downloadable media.
  • Serves as a library ambassador with a positive attitude.
  • Other duties as required.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

High School diploma or equivalent.  Bachelor’s degree preferred with major coursework in marketing, journalism or related field desirable; work toward MLS degree a plus.  Library experience supportive of youth and adult services in a public library or other non-profit is preferred.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

Knowledge of basic library practices and procedures in a public library setting; continues to develop a working knowledge of the library setting, and its collection and organization. 

Experience working with children and/or teens in a group setting is desirable.  Prior library experience preferred; requires knowledge of children’s and young adult literature, materials and programming.

Strong knowledge of technology and computers, including the ability to use the Internet, email, Mircrsoft Office Suite and desktop publishing software; ability to research general information about books and authors using the internet as needed; Must have computer ability to adequately use Sierra integrated library system.

Employee must have the ability to deal effectively with the public and co-workers; ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when dealing with difficult patrons; ability to follow instructions, to manage numerous diverse tasks at one time, and to complete projects on time with minimum supervision. 

Excellent customer service skills; a professional demeanor and comportment; good verbal and written communication skills; excellent organizational and planning skills; able to multi-task in a fast paced environment.

Physical Requirements

The job includes some physically challenging work, such as pushing a loaded book truck; locating and obtaining information and materials of a wide variety of sizes and shapes, from various locations throughout the library; walking and standing for extended periods, and carrying a reasonable selection of materials between places;  must be able to reach overhead shelves, bend to floor level shelves, and push a full book truck weighing 200lbs.  The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, and use hands to operate equipment.  Vision requirements include ability to read routine documents and use a computer.
