Annual Fund Intern, Reach Out and Read, Boston, MA

Reach Out and Read is seeking a qualified intern to support a growing Annual Fund. The intern will be an integral part of a small, dynamic, and fun-loving fundraising team, making real and important contributions to our work. We are looking for an individual who is ready to take initiative and proactively dive into projects, while also asking questions and working collaboratively. 

This position is part time with a flexible schedule. The intern will be expected to work 20 hours per week during business hours (Monday-Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm) over the summer, with the option to continue at 10-12 hours per week during the academic year. The position is paid, at a level commensurate with experience. 

Specific responsibilities include:

Research (40%)

  • Conduct research on leadership donors and major gift prospects using Wealth Engine and other online tools;
  • Write research memos and update database profiles; provide prep for Development Director, Executive Director, and members of the Board of Directors before key meetings;
  • Provide due diligence on proposed partnerships or cause marketing opportunities as they arise.

Administrative Work (40%)

  • Assist with data maintenance projects in Salesforce CRM;
  • Coordinate donor mailings, run mail merges, hand write thank you cards;
  • Draft agendas, create itineraries, and coordinate meeting materials;
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Annual Fund Fundraising (20%)

  • Participate in creating donor marketing strategy as it relates to our annual solicitations, monthly email communications, and stewardship efforts;
  • Copyedit written communications for supporters and review design elements;
  • Develop impact stories to be used in fundraising materials.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong writing and research skills.
  • Organized, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Self-starter, with willingness to take initiative and try new things.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Good interpersonal skills, with an interest in learning more about development, marketing, and donor relations.
  • Database experience is appreciated.
  • Interest in nonprofits, early literacy or education issues a plus. 

Successful interns will:

  • Build concrete skills, such as individual prospect research and proficiency in Salesforce CRM.
  • Understand the best practices for donor stewardship and solicitation, as well as other areas of nonprofit fundraising.
  • Learn about early literacy in the pediatric healthcare setting and how it benefits children. The intern will have the opportunity to visit a program site as well as connect with the Programs Department to learn about program operations.
