Assistant Bookstore Manager, Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst, MA

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst seeks an Assistant Manager for its children’s bookstore to enthusiastically support the Museum’s mission of inspiring a love of art and reading through picture books. The ideal candidate will be an energetic picture book lover with outstanding customer service skills and a penchant for organization and time management. Under the guidance of the Manager, the Assistant Manager will oversee the day-to-day bookstore operations, supervise booksellers, identify, prioritize, assign and perform tasks based on the demands of the business; and maintain a safe, clean and cheerful store environment. Other duties include but are not limited to cash handling, opening and closing the shop, receiving and restocking inventory, making book recommendations and other customer service tasks. Candidates must enjoy working with the public, be very comfortable with technology, multitasking, and with learning new systems and processes. The majority of your time will be spent on the selling floor, which requires physical activity, including prolonged standing, and repetitive bending/lifting of at least 25 lbs. This benefitted position is 30 hours a week; one weekend day is required with occasional holiday and evening shifts to support special events. Requirements/Qualifications:

  • You’re a quick problem-solver who can accurately assess situations and exercise independent judgement in line with established procedures.
  • Your customer service skills are exceptional, you love working with people and especially love talking to others about books.
  • You have strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and are comfortable collaborating with others.
  • You have the ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions, successfully multitask with interruptions and maintain a high standard of professionalism and quick thinking in high-pressure situations.
  • 2 years retail experience; supervisory experience preferred.
