Director, Library Collections, Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA

As a member of the senior leadership team in Library & Technology Services (LTS), a merged Library/IT organization, the Director of Library Collections is the lead advocate for the College’s library collections, and acts as a key advisor to the CIO on issues, policies, and matters relating to the library collections, spaces, and services. Working closely with the faculty, students, and LTS colleagues, this position helps to ensure the integrated delivery of services and scholarly resources to the Wellesley community.

This position participates in the development of strategic priorities and initiatives for library collections; engages in strong outreach efforts within the College, among other small liberal arts college libraries, and with local and national organizations; collaborates on major projects for the benefit of the College; participates in relationship development with our invested alumnae community; monitors the changing patterns of scholarly communication; and develops strategies to incorporate and respond to emerging trends in the creation and delivery of information resources.  

The Director manages a complex group of professional staff responsible for the acquisition, description, maintenance, preservation, and interpretation of library collections resources, including Special Collections, the official records of the college in the Archives, and the Book Arts Program. Responsible for the effective deployment of staff and financial resources to provide the best service the College community, the Director participates in LTS operational budget planning and development.

Requirements:

  • Masters Degree required
  • MLS/MLIS and Masters Degree in relevant subject area preferred
  • 8-10 years experience working in an academic library or information services organization
  • 8-10 years in a leadership role and/or management position
  • Working knowledge of at least one foreign language
  • Broad understanding of the mission of a liberal arts college and the central role of Library and Technology Services in achieving it
  • Significant experience in the management of information resources in an academic library, including knowledge and understanding of the organization of information resources
  • Deep knowledge of scholarly publishing
  • Understanding of the importance and use of primary sources in academic research and teaching at the undergraduate level
  • Substantial knowledge of specific subject disciplines, their literature and their methods of scholarly discourse
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Budget and financial management experience
