Director of Student Inquiry and Research, The White Mountain School, Bethlehem, NH

The White Mountain School seeks a Director of Student Inquiry and Research to begin duties on August 15, 2016.  This is a new position in support of our institutional focus on Authentic Inquiry – learning driven by questions that truly matter to students.

Founded in 1886, The White Mountain School is a boarding school (grades 9-12) located in the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire. Our mission statement reads: “We are a school of inquiry and engagement.  Grounded in our Episcopal heritage, we prepare and inspire students to lead lives of curiosity, courage and compassion.”  We believe this is an incredibly exciting time in education, and we take seriously the idea that education for the future must be about more than memorization and recall; it must be about authentic inquiry and true engagement with our intellectual heritage.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Significant academic research experience.
  • Knowledge of emerging trends in education.
  • Experience working with adolescents (at the high school or early college level) on research projects.
  • Experience supporting traditional as well as digital tools, resources, and methods for teaching, learning and research
  • Collaborative skills for supporting all teachers at the school as they engage students in Authentic Inquiry.
  • A Master’s Degree in Library & Information Science (MLIS) or in Education OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • The desire and skills to lead a flagship program at the school.

The Director of Student Inquiry and Research will support students in their inquiry and research through our Research Seminar course, by supporting faculty advisors of independent projects, and by working with teachers of all disciplines as their students engage in inquiry.  This position is ideal for a librarian who wants to work more directly with students and build a flagship program, or for a creative, visionary academic leader with a belief in the importance of student inquiry.  As part of the position, the Director will engage in the life of the school, including serving as an advisor to students and being involved in afternoon activities and residential life.  We’re proud of our increasingly diverse student body, and encourage candidates from traditionally underrepresented groups in librarianship and education to apply.

We believe that education for the future must change, and that students must be challenged and supported to pursue serious inquiry – learning to frame and follow their own questions with rigor and creativity.  This position is an opportunity to shape and lead this change in education.

Candidates should send cover letter and resume via email to Jessica Willis, Assistant to the Head of School (jessica.willis@whitemountain.org).
