TITLE: Reference Librarian/Local History

DEPARTMENT: Public Library

LOCATION: Hingham Public Library 66 Leavitt St. Hingham, MA

STATUS: Part-time: 20 hours/week average.

HOURS: Schedule includes some evenings and Saturdays as scheduled by the Assistant Library Director. Schedule subject to change throughout the year. 

SALARY: $29.45 – $35.24 per hour (Grade L 15) in five annual steps.

DUTIES: The Reference Librarian/Local History provides reference, genealogical and local history research, and reader’s advisory services to adults; training staff and/or public to use electronic resources and devices; planning and scheduling library programs for adults.

Assists the public with technological functions such as accessing Internet, email, social media and Office applications. Duties include managing the library’s local history collections and genealogical resources, responding to general and specialized inquiries, assisting patrons in use of the library’s research tools, overseeing researcher access to the local history collection and making referrals to other institutions with applicable resources. Collaborates with reference staff, Town departments, committees and organizations to preserve, organize, and facilitate access to local history resources. Cooperates with external agencies’ personnel to display and manage the library’s digital collections in regional, state and national collections. Develops and writes grant proposals to government agencies, foundations, and other organizations and manages them as assigned. Also assists the public with technological functions such as accessing Internet, email, social media and Office applications. Works on special projects as assigned by the Assistant Library Director or the Library Director. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: A candidate for this position should have a Masters Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university and five (5) years of professional public or academic library experience or equivalent education and experience. Documented work experience with local history and genealogy collections. Knowledge of archival standards for preservation and organization of historical materials and of metadata standards and schemes preferred.
