Library Director, York Public Library, York, ME

The York Public Library, incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization, is accepting applications for the position of Library Director. The Library is a 25,000 sq. ft. facility constructed in 2001 and located in the Town of York, Maine. York is a picturesque coastal Maine community with a year round population of 12,500 and a summer seasonal population several times greater. Significant users of theLibrary include families with children as well as a growing population of retirees who have relocated here.

The Library is seeking a dynamic candidate who has the ability to thoughtfully lead the organization’s evolution, while preserving valued programs and offerings, through the development and implementation of the library’s vision. The successful candidate will serve as an ambassador for the library advocating and promoting the mission within the community by demonstrating enthusiasm, creativity, innovation and an understanding and respect for the needs, interests and demands of the York community.

The Library Director is a highly responsible administrative, supervisory, and professional position responsible for directing a broad range of public library functions. Work involves responsibility for the provision of library services to patrons and community organizations. Duties include the development, planning, administration and management of staff, budget, policy, collections, and general library activities. This position requires independent judgment, initiative and decision-making, along with frequent contact and cooperation with outside agencies, the public, Town and Library officials, and other senior staff members. Work is performed under the general direction of the Library Board of Trustees and is evaluated through observation, review, and reporting.

A Master’s degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university plus eight (8) years of progressively responsible library administration experience, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory capacity, is recommended. Experience in grant writing and institutional advancement desirable. An equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides a demonstrated ability to successfully meet the requirements of the position, may be considered.

The position is a full-time, exempt, non-bargaining position and will require attendance at evening meetings as well as weekend work. Competitive salary will be dependent upon experience andqualifications.
