Duties & Responsibilities

Draws on expert-level business-related subject knowledge, business information resources expertise, and information research methodologies expertise to perform some combination of the following duties: 

  • Provides primary support for KLS’s Curriculum and Learning Services group, particularly related to Stamps Reading Room services and Baker for Business (B4B).
  • Supports Baker Library curated information services products, including newsletters and curriculum related products.
  • Explains data and other information format contents and variable definitions to users; prepares informative and illustrative reports, exhibits and explanations; plans, conducts, and presents results of analytical procedures, possibly including statistical analysis. 
  • Contributes content to self-help tools and information products; participates in collection development and usage analysis projects.
  • Accesses and extracts information from data in a variety of formats and from a variety of sources (e.g., web, primary materials, secondary materials).
  • Works both independently and cooperatively with other research service providers within Knowledge and Library Services and HBS on multiple projects involving varieties of data sources, customers, and analytical tools.  Provides high quality, results-driven customer service. Evening and weekend hours may be required.

In collaboration with colleagues within Knowledge and Library Services and across Harvard Business School and Harvard University, performs some combination of the following:

  • Provides reference and information research services in multiple modalities (e.g., in person, email, phone, instant messenger.)
  • Consults with product and services development teams to determine research data and analytical needs, developing plans for supporting research projects, and personally implementing or managing the implementation of those plans.
  • Leverages the holdings of Baker Library’s contemporary and/or historical collections; suggests resources available through Harvard Libraries and the broader world of business information in print and on the Web as appropriate to meet researchers’ needs.
  • Identifies relevant information sources among standard third-party databases including, but not limited to: CRSP, Compustat/Research Insight, Datastream, SDC, and Bloomberg. 
  • Researches, identifies, evaluates, obtains, accesses, interprets, and analyzes text and quantitative information and data from printed and digital sources, including, but not limited to: macroeconomic, financial, accounting, and securities data; information gathered in field studies; and, where appropriate, information collected from third-party and non-traditional sources.
  • Contributes to developing a collection that supports the assigned subject specialty and anticipates future directions.  Participates in the collection and analysis of usage statistics to make informed decisions.
  • Participates in or leads user experience activities such as the development and implementation of user satisfaction feedback mechanisms, promoting services, and identifying new opportunities.
  • Uses appropriate tools for data management, such as Excel, and/or Access, and/or SAS.
  • Completes other relevant duties as assigned.

Works independently and cooperatively within Knowledge and Library Services and HBS, and within functional areas including corporate finance, accounting, international business, financial markets, organizational behavior, data analysis, business history, etc.   Evening and weekend hours may be required.

Other relevant duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Masters degree or equivalent graduate education in Business Administration, Economics, Statistics, or Library/Information Science, or other relevant discipline.  Second Masters degree in related field highly desirable.
  • Minimum 6 years of professional-level information research work experience, preferably in a corporate or academic environment.
  • Expert knowledge of business information sources; broad knowledge of business topics including corporate finance, accounting, business history, etc.; solid understanding of business and economics concepts and related quantitative measures.  Demonstrated skills and experience in the use of common tools for information access, management, analysis, and presentation.  Demonstrated ability to access and extract information from data in a variety of formats.
  • Record of involvement in empirical investigations in business and/or economics or research experience in a large corporate or academic library. 
  • Demonstrated dedication, flexibility, creativity, and adaptability in the uses and management of available resources and in identifying, evaluating, acquiring, accessing, and employing new resources. 
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and thrive in a high-paced, changing, collaborative environment. Able to produce timely, high quality results under pressure. 
  • Highly developed skills in information organization, presentation and delivery; critical thinking; customer service; initiative. 
  • Demonstrated record of managing client relationships, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines and sharing workloads and projects with a research team. 
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel and/or SAS; intermediate to advanced desktop and/or UNIX computer skills (as applicable) 
  • Excellent organizational, writing, communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Record of involvement in the mentoring and coaching of junior research staff and novice researchers.
