Librarian, Manager of Technical Services, Pequot Library, Fairfield County, CT

Wage/​Salary: $40k-$55k

JOB DESCRIPTION: Plan, organize, and supervise the services and activities in the Technical Services, including cataloging, classification, and maintenance of the entire collection. In addition, provide library services with an emphasis in teen programming for and with young adults and those who work with young adults.

DUTIES:

Tech Services (50%)

  • Responsible for all activities related to materials acquisition, processing, and classification.
  • Manages Technical Services in a manner that supports the overall goals of the library.
  • Recommends and implements appropriate changes in technical policies and procedures.
  • Reviews, purchases, receives, processes and classifies all books and materials.
  • Assigns appropriate Dewey Decimal Classification number and LC Headings to print and non-print materials.
  • Uses and maintains library-shared database system; performs original cataloguing when appropriate.
  • Compiles collection statistics monthly for Executive Director and Board, and creates reports as needed.
  • Provides prompt, courteous and direct assistance to patrons with basic information regarding use of library materials, equipment, and services.

General Library Services (35%)

  • Attends and participates in professional library conferences, seminars, and network committees; reads professional literature; attends and participates in staff meeting discussions.
  • Schedules and oversee the front desk staff including their collection of daily attendance
  • Takes a leadership role in book related exhibitions and author talks (Meet the Author)
  • Assists in planning adult programming
  • Selects Adult and Young Adult materials.
  • Assists Children’s Librarian and Executive Director when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Teen Librarian (15%)

  • Ensures the library’s collections include relevant print and digital resources aimed at the specific interests and needs of the teens in the community.
  • Plans, implements and evaluates library programs and services which fulfill the diverse education, recreation and personal needs of local teens.
  • Instructs teens and caregivers in information gathering, research skills and digital literacy skills.
  • Adopts a connected learning approach to presenting programs, classes and events for and with teens so that they educate, inform, and inspire.
  • Takes a leadership role in developing, implementing and evaluating the overall teen services program.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program, with experience in Technical Services.
  • Two or more years of professional experience in a library setting, with supervisory or administrative experience preferred.
  • Experience in working for and with young adults (ages 12 to 18).
  • Experience with computer applications and programs for library services.
  • Be able to lift a maximum of 40 lbs. at times as required by job.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Thorough knowledge of standard library procedures, issues, and techniques as well as current information technology, Internet and database search capabilities.
  • Knowledge of best practices, including guidelines and standards published by ALA, YALSA and other recognized organizations.
  • Knowledge of developmental, recreational, and education needs of young adults.
  • Ability to work independently and accurately.
  • Must communicate effectively with others, library staff and library patrons, orally and in writing, including through email.
