Reference and Instruction Resident, Swarthmore College Libraries, Swarthmore, PA

The Swarthmore College Libraries seek a self-starter, intellectually curious recent MLS/MLIS graduate or CLIR Postdoctoral Fellow for the position of Reference and Instruction Resident. The ideal candidate will have significant responsibility for key aspects of the libraries’ research consultation and instruction program. He/she will supervise and mentor participants in the Research and Information Associates peer learning program, assist in the delivery of the annual spring semester library intern curriculum and lead a series of events for library colleagues on emerging pedagogies.  We are seeking an outgoing, proactive and engaged individual who can develop collaborative relationships with students, staff and faculty and create initiatives to promote research, teaching, and learning on-campus.

The incumbent will be assigned as liaison with para-curricular centers such as the Black Cultural Center, Intercultural Center, and Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility. They will facilitate collaborations that could include collection development, special projects, or other forms of outreach. Academic departmental work will be primarily collaborative with subject librarians and based upon subject expertise including undergraduate major or master’s degree course of study, as well as the needs of the library. They are encouraged to actively engage in research, scholarship, and professional activities, and will be supported in pursuing professional development. As part of the Reference Department, the Swarthmore Libraries, and the Tri-College Libraries, the incumbent will have access to a broad network of supportive colleagues and will be given mentorship opportunities.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science, entry level candidates welcome, or CLIR Postdoctoral Fellow
  • Familiarity with library reference services and information resources
  • Knowledge of current instructional technologies

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently and in a highly collaborative environment
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
  • Initiative, flexibility, and a strong service orientation
  • Experience working with culturally diverse populations
  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required

Preferred:

  •  Experience providing a full range of general reference services
  • Experience or coursework in reference or teaching at a post-secondary level
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive, support and implement diversity initiatives

This is a 2 year limited term position with renewal possible, benefits eligible
